Metallic Epoxy Flooring System

Project Overview: Metallic Epoxy System w/ Aluminum Oxide anti-slip in Polyaspartic Topcoat 3200 sq ft

Metallic Epoxy Flooring System

Our friends over at Smart Start academy run a high end child development center in Hoboken NJ and they wanted a floor to wow the parents of new perspective students. There is no epoxy flooring system more eye catching then a metallic. The finished look is a smooth, glass like finish that has a unique and subtle reflective sparkle. No two floors will ever look the same. There are endless creative techniques that can be used to create a style that you can call your own. Metallic floors are great for a number of reason beyond just aesthetics though, metallic in some cases is actually cheaper than most decorative flake and stained floor systems. High Performance Systems  offers a cost effective metallic flooring system  that still contains  the strength and durability of a regular epoxy floor in this case we were able to add a special polyaspartic topcoat to make it slip proof since small children would be running around on it. To start this project we began Diamond grinding the entire substrate to remove enamel finish from the existing  ceramic tile and establish mechanical profile. Next we created keyways at all terminations by  sawcutting at termination 1/8” depth and taper back to floor 2” to maintain system thickness while meeting termination elevation to ensure bond and maintain a flat surface. Once all the substrate prep was complete we vacuum entire space and solvent wipe to remove all dust particles. Before we began applying any resinous flooring we taped up the crown molding of the entire perimeter of the floor and ran craft paper 3 ft up the floor to prevent any epoxy from splashing on the walls. Once that was completed we applied the system primer of Fastop SL to add compressive strength and fill in all grout lines from the tile. Before it was dry we broadcast sand into the Fastop for even more compressive strength and to add something for the prime coat to adhere to. Once that was completely dry and excess sand was swept off we screened the floor using 100 grit  screens to minimize the texture of the sand. Next we applied the special order black tinted prime coat of 3569 to create a backdrop for the metallic coat. Once that was fully cured we applied the metallic coat of GP3746 with added metallic pigment of sandbar and white drizzle to create the effect. On the next and final day we applied our state of the art top coat of GP4850 polyaspartic for scratch and slip resistance with added 220 grit aluminum oxide for even more slip protection.

Metallic Epoxy Flooring System

Scope:

  1. Diamond grind entire substrate to remove enamel finish from ceramic tile and establish mechanical profile
  2. Create keyways at all terminations: sawcut at termination 1/8” depth and taper back to floor 2” to maintain system thickness while meeting termination elevation
  3. Edge all equipment legs and patches using hand grinders to ensure bond and flat surface
  4. Vacuum entire space and solvent wipe to remove all dust particle
  5. Apply system primer/slurry: Fastop SL; urethane cement slurry
  6. Broadcast to excess using 80/120 grit silica
  7. Screen floor to minimize texture: using 100 grit screens
  8. Prime slurry for metallic coat: GP 3569 tinted to black @ 80 sf./ gal w/sil-co-sil thickening agent
  9. Apply system metallic coat: GP 3746; 100% solid epoxy with metallic effect pigment color sandbar & white drizzle
  10. Apply system topcoat: GP 4850; polyaspartic UV stable scratch resistant topcoat w/ 220 grit aluminum oxide for slip resistance

Metallic Epoxy Flooring System

Result:

The end result is a beautiful high gloss one of a kind metallic epoxy floor system , setting Smart Start  apart from the competition. This metallic epoxy flooring system will continue to offer abrasian and impact resistance, while remaining safe, eye catching, and easy to maintain/ clean for many years to come.
